Pros
1) Its Cheap - But there is a reason fof this (see Cons)
2) As it is PCI you dont have as many boxes
hanging around.
Cons
1) The Chipset used by the 310 was made by a
company called Itex. They have gone bust.. Itex
provide binary only drivers. Although these can
still be used on different kernels, the lack of source means that if you run into difficulties you are stuffed.
2) Old hardware may be too old - most people used an old PC as an internet gateway and firewall. The itex drivers do not work on some older motherboards that dont support a certain level of PCI chipset
3) I found that the ATM drivers on the CD provided by Solwise didnt compile without a patch. Although the ATM drivers are now supplied in the kernel 2.4.19, this does exactly strike me as a quality offering
4) The PPP drivers on the same CD didnt
seem to be able to parse /etc/ppp/options.
5) Solwise dont know anything about linux
and will not be able to help you (although
they are very efficient and otherwise helpful)
Conclusion - I would say that its best to go
for the 703 rather than the 310. You will have
to put up with another box but it is hit and
miss whether it will work on linux.
For some people it worked first time but
for just as many others there seems to be
problems.
