View Full Version : WEP on the 522B

I've just set up a 522B WAP to replace a Netgear ME102 which went belly up. And I have an slightly strange problem.

I have two IBM Thinkpads on my network, connected wirelessly to the WAP which is linked to a Solwise 715 Router. I have it set up to use 64 bit encryption - this all worked fine with the ME102.

When the ME102 broke, I decided to go for a 522B as it looked easier to configure (web rather than USB) - but I can't get WEP working properly.

One TPad uses a Netgear 401 Wireless PCMCIA card - and this works fine. The other TPad has a built-in wireless network card. It works with no problem when the WAP is set to use both Open and Shared keys (or just open), but as soon as I restrict it to shared key only, I lose connection from this second TPad with a WEP error. The other TPad carries on working regardless. Even stranger is that if I look at the status on the TPad with the problem when the WAP is set to use both open and shared, it says that it's connected with encryption.

Bizarre - any idea what's going on?

I'm not happy at leaving my WAP with open access (for obvious reasons).

Have you tried disabling the built-in wireless in the second tpad an trying the netgear card.? Just to rule out the tpad and os....

Sounds like a config problem with the second tpad and it's obviously to do with the wep entry. Try a VERY simple wep key like "1". Then see what happens.

Good idea - I'll try that over Easter...

Thanks

Okay - I've now done the following:
- Disabled internal wireless card in problem TPad
- Installed Netgear PC Card
- Guess what - it worked!!!

I've also tried swapping out the Pheenet WAP for a borrowed Netgear WAP and everything went back to working again.

So - my conclusion is that there is definitely something amiss when using an IBM T23 Thinkpad with a built-in wireless card with the Pheenet WAP with WEP enabled. If you sub either end with the Netgear equivalent - it works.

Any ideas as to where I go from here?

BTW: T23 firmware and drivers updated to latest versions
