View Full Version : Using a webcam with an ASUS6000EV

I have an ASUS6000EV and am on Pipex with a dynamic IP and run W2K.

I run my router on NAT and gather that I may have some trouble doing video-conferencing with a webcam.

Perhaps portforwarding is a good way forward or should I run on a non-NAT mode? Is running on a non-NAT mode a big security risk.

Can anyone provide any pointers or relevant info/URLs on how to go about doing this (I'm no expert on router configuration)

Thanks

You have no choice. You must run in NAT mode. If you want to run in non-NAT (i.e. bridged) mode you need to have multiple fixed IP addresses. Your ISP will probably provide them, but at an extra cost.

There are some programs which don't play well with NAT, e.g. MSN Messenger, because for some of their fuctions they use protocols not always supported by NAT, or by particular routers. For example, you may be able to initiate a file-transfer session, but not be on the other end of one, or vice-versa (I can't remember which way round it is).

See http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp and http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ for some more information.

I did have a 6000EV - upgraded to SAR 715 now.

Web cam on Yahoo messenger works fine on 6000EV (no router config required).

MSN Messenger will not work for voice or video.
